Mortier re-issued Blaeu’s “Nouveau Théatre d’Italie” because, tragically, in 1672, a fire destroyed the Blaeu family printing house. Joan Blaeu died a year later. Mortier took over what was left of Blaeu’s plates and Mortier re-issued Blaeu’s books of Italy with a mixture of new plates and the plates salvaged from the fire, including this fine, large panorama of Ancona by Joan Blaeu.
