Islandia monster map

This sea monster map is a print of a re-engraving of Ortelius’s famous Icelandic monster map believed to have been made by Jean Boisseau.

This smaller map shows Iceland and its seas with all the monsters you can muster. Included in the map are mountains, glaciers, fjords and a lovely illustration of Mount Hekla erupting.

Other creatures more easily identifiable on the coastlines are Polar Bears playing among icebergs.

This re-engraving lists over 200 place names, some of which were clearly misread from Ortelius’ map and are incorrect, but these mistakes are what make old maps so interesting.
